It is no secret that Brookline is a town full of restaurants, with countless dining spots found mostly on or near three main roads--Beacon Street, Harvard Street, and Washington Street, with a few others located along Boylston Street (Route 9) as well. And unlike some Boston-area communities such as Malden, Newton, and Quincy, there aren't all that many eateries hidden away off the beaten path within Brookline's neighborhoods, though if you look hard enough, you will find a few such places, including a terrific breakfast and lunch spot called Brick Wall Kitchen that is in an old section of town that very few people outside of Brookline seem to even know about.
Brick Wall Kitchen sits near the northern edge of a section of Brookline called Whiskey Point that used to be mostly a working-class neighborhood, and which has a rather different vibe from many other parts of town, with its triple-deckers, slightly gritty but close-knit feel, and scattering of small ma-and-pa shops. Because it is south of Route 9 and pretty far away from bustling Coolidge Corner and Washington Square, the restaurant is located in an area that gets relatively little foot traffic, which makes it more of a true neighborhood eatery where you won't see many college students or tourists. Housed in a small space (and yes, it has brick walls), Brick Wall Kitchen is a bright and sunny place with local art adorning the walls, tables that are spaced out nicely, and a counter where you order your food for takeout or dining in.
While considered both a breakfast and lunch spot, Brick Wall Kitchen tends to be known mainly for its inventive and at times offbeat breakfast options which are served throughout the day. (The people behind it also do pop-ups around the Greater Boston area and catering.) For those who like traditional breakfasts, the breakfast platter may be the way to go, with two eggs, a choice of pancakes, french toast, or waffles, a choice of bacon, sausage, or turkey sausage, and a freshly-made potato pancake. Omelettes are also offered here, including a slightly healthy and slightly decadent one called the ABC, which includes arugula, avocado, bacon, and cheddar. Another good choice among the omelettes is the Mediterranean, which has a nice mix of feta cheese, olives, tomatoes, and portobello mushrooms. Egg sandwiches, smoky maple breakfast sandwiches (with sausage), and smoked salmon sandwiches are also available, and on weekends, a real highlight is the French Toast breakfast sandwich, which includes eggs, bacon, and cheese stuffed into two pieces of challah french toast. For those who think that corned beef hash is an unhealthy meal, the house-made version at Brick Wall Kitchen is actually relatively healthy, with cubes of corned beef mixed with potatoes, celery, onions, and red peppers. Breakfast sides include the aforementioned potato pancakes, while croissants, muffins, and bagels are also offered. A few more weekend brunch items include a sinful "Fraiche" toast--the French toast is stuffed with creme fraiche and strawberries and has a hint of tarragon--along with a plate of crab cakes and a grilled chicken breast on a bed of lentils. Lunch consists mainly of sandwiches, with a BLT, house-made roast beef, grilled cheese, and a reuben being a few options, as well as several types of salads such as a lemon herb chicken breast salad and a Caprese salad with portobello mushrooms. Coffee, tea, espresso, cappuccino, and mocha are a few drink choices at Brick Wall Kitchen, and smoothies are available as well.
Whiskey Point may sound like a place that you might find along the docks of a gritty seaside town rather than in a leafy suburb such as Brookline, but such a place does exist (though many simply call it "The Point" now). And because the neighborhood itself is a bit of a hidden gem, the few dining spots here certainly are as well, and that is definitely the case with Brick Wall Kitchen. The place may be a bit tough to get to if you need to rely on public transportation, and for those who tend to stick around Beacon Street and Harvard Street, this spot may be outside of your radius, but for those willing to do just a bit of exploring, this little restaurant is surely worth checking out.
