A couple of months ago, we wrote about five highly-anticipated summer restaurant openings in the Boston area, and as is the case of the restaurant world, only two of them have actually opened (Banyan and Luke's Lobster). A couple of them carry over to this list--as it appears they probably won't be opening by the end of the summer--along with three other spots that are attracting a lot of attention.
1) Yvonne's, Boston
Locke-Ober may be long gone now, but the landmark space in downtown Boston will soon have a restaurant in it once again, as a modern supper club called Yvonne's will be opening there. Included at the new spot will be a library bar, dishes that honor Locke-Ober, and cut-glass cocktail towers from Palmer Matthews of Drink. If all goes well, Yvonne's could be opening in September, though it appears that October may now be more realistic. [UPDATE: Now open.]
Address: 3 Winter Place, Boston, MA, 02108.
2) Villa Mexico, Boston
It looked like a popular Mexican spot that closed in Boston's Beacon Hill area was going to be reopening in its new home sometime in July or possibly August, but it now appears that Villa Mexico might not open on Water Street until the fall. But it will indeed be opening (construction is moving along) and when it does, it will be featuring Julie King's legendary salsa, burritos, and much, much more.
Address: 121 Water Street, Boston, MA, 02109.
3) Wahlburgers, Boston (Fenway)
Back in June, it looked like the Fenway location of Wahlburgers might be opening in July, August, or September, but there is no opening date as of yet, and construction, while coming along nicely, is not done yet. At this point, it is possible that The Wahlberg brothers could have their new place open sometime in September, but if not, later in the fall seems a likely bet--and until then, you can go to locations in Hingham and Lynnfield. [UPDATE: Now open.]
Address: 132 Brookline Avenue, Boston, MA, 02215.
4) Tiger Mama, Boston (Fenway)
One of Boston's best-known chefs--Tiffani Faison--is getting ready to opening a second restaurant near her first one (Sweet Cheeks Q), and it appears that the menu at Tiger Mama will include items influenced by her trips to such countries as Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam, with Asian street food apparently on the way. No opening date has been given as of yet, but Tiger Mama is expected to open on Boylston Street sometime in the fall. [UPDATE: It looks like Tiger Mama will open in early December.]
Address: 1363 Boylston Street, Boston, MA, 02215.
5) Branch Line, Watertown
Eastern Standard in Kenmore Square is a restaurant that seems to be on so many "best of" lists, and a couple of people behind the place are now getting ready to open a new spot a few miles west. Garrett Harker and Andrew Holden will be opening a place called Branch Line at Arsenal on the Charles in Watertown, and it looks like it will be an "urban rotisserie" that has what looks to be a top-level beer and wine program. As of now, the restaurant hopes to open in late September. [UPDATE: Now open.]
Address: 321 Arsenal Street, Watertown, MA, 02472.
Unlike with the summer post, it seems a pretty sure bet that all five of these dining spots should open in the fall, but as they say in the restaurant business, you never know. Which soon-to-open restaurants are you looking forward to trying? Tell us in the Comments section here. [Image above from Villa Mexico.]
