The Ongoing Debate About Seaport District Restaurants

photo of The Whiskey Priest in the Seaport District of Boston, MAIt seems like the restaurant scene in Boston's Seaport District has been a hot topic among folks of late, with restaurant owners and diners alike talking about the good, the bad, and the ugly when it comes to this hotspot just east of the downtown area. A Boston Business Journal article this week includes L'Espalier owner Frank McClelland saying that "The Seaport has sucked the wind out of the city" and "Everyone on the street in Boston is hurting to fill seats because too many seats have been built," while posters on a new Chowhound thread have stated that it is "too slick, soulless and intended for people passing through but not anyone who lives nearby" and "Something about the Disneyworldish vibe of Seaport Blvd. sort of repels me" with supporters saying "I could give a hoot if they're chains" and "I like being near the water and the easy and often free parking." (Food writers have also joined the debate, with MC Slim JB stating that "The Seaport is clearly giving a lot of customers what they want; it's mostly just not what I want." and BostonZest saying "I don't think the Seaport is hurting the restaurants I care most about.")

As BostonZest mentions, it is interesting to see that the Seaport District and the adjacent Fort Point area are shaping up to be two very different places for dining out, as Fort Point seems to be attracting a combination of independent eateries as well as dining spots owned by celebrity chefs. There are exceptions, of course (Sam's in the Seaport area, for instance), but for the most part, it appears that the two neighborhoods will appeal to very different crowds once all is said and done.

I definitely like the Fort Point feel over the Seaport. I've eaten at legal (roof deck only), rosa, and the other mexican restaurant. I left each place midly satisfied, but felt ripped off. Too expensive for what you get. And the crowds are terrible. Limit the number of guests so I can actually get a drink at the bar without fighting a crowd for 20 minutes.
