Potbellies Kitchen: A Welcome Addition to South Boston

We recently tried a new restaurant in South Boston called Potbellies Kitchen. Located just north of the Broadway T station on the West Side of Southie, Potbellies Kitchen resides in a large house. The space that the restaurant is in is tiny but attractive in a funky sort of way. In addition to their regular menu, they also have daily specials written on the blackboards on the walls. The night we went, they also had some great music piping through the place, including a bit of traditional Chicago blues as well as some good jazz.

photo of Potbellies Kitchen, South Boston, MA We ordered a few items for dinner when we went, including one of the best Caesar salads I have had in a long time. The ingredients were fresh, and the dressing was tangy. I also tried the delicious watercress soup, which was their soup of the day. And I asked them if they could put together a grilled corned beef sandwich with swiss cheese, which they gladly did even though it wasn't on the menu. One more item that we tried was the haddock dinner, which was also excellent. Potbellies Kitchen did not have a liquor license at the time we went (I'm sure they have one by now, though), so we had to order soft drinks.

The folks who own Potbellies Kitchen are very nice, and they definitely seem to really care about their place and the people who dine there. One of the owners used to be a chef at the terrific Silvertone in Downtown Crossing, so there is a reason why the food is so good here. I know that I will be back at Potbellies soon, as I want to try some of their other dishes (including the Cubano, which they were out of the night we went). If Potbellies impresses once again, it might just be added as a featured restaurant on our site. And based on the first meal we had there, the odds of that happening are pretty darn good.

For those who are looking for the address of Potbellies Kitchen, here it is: Potbellies Kitchen, 87 A Street, South Boston, MA 02127; the phone number is (617) 269-2233

I just wanted to say we had a beautiful meal - takeout - from Potbellies just now, [I found this article when I was searching for their phone number to call them and say how delicious it was!] Iron flank steak seasoned with an awesome crust of rich spices, a 'family recipe' savory spaghetti of chili-like meat, peppers and herbs, a pan-roasted salmon filet, ratatouille and cucumber salads as sides - amazing. Everything so fresh, tasty, and exactly what I would have made if I hadn't just had a long day and wanted the luxury of someone else cooking for me. And as an unexpected treat, a slice of heavenly chocolate cake from Sweet Tooth Boston [also a new and very welcome neighbor!] Luckily, they are 5 minutes' walk from our door. Even though we have been going there at least twice a week since early Decmber, the daily specials mean that there's always something new and we have been continually impressed and delighted.

Their food is great and the service is even better! We got takeout from them and they forgot to put something in the bag for us. Well lo and behold they sent us a gift card to their restaurant and sent the food by cab because they do not deliver and quite honestly once you get home with your takeout the last thing you want to do is have to go out again. I think this restaurant is simply the best in South Boston.

I drove by Potbellies Kitchen tonight after hearing that it may have closed down. Turns out that Potbellies hasn't closed; it has just undergone a name change. It is now called St. Alphonzo's Kitchen.
