A Sneak Peek at Moody's Backroom in Waltham

Since opening its doors in the fall of 2013, Moody's Delicatessen and Provisions in Waltham has become a favorite of diners and critics alike, with the Moody Street shop offering all kinds of top-quality handcrafted meats along with soups, salads, and much more. Until now, it has been seen mainly as a takeout spot with limited seating, but that is about to change with the upcoming opening of The Backroom.

photo of The Backroom at Moody's, Waltham, MassachusettsBack in August of 2014, it was learned that Wings Express, which was located next door to Moody's, closed down for good and that Moody's decided to expand into the space. At the time, it looked like the new space was going to be used simply for additional seating for the shop, though it was quickly discovered that this would not be a simple expansion; instead, the space was going to include a full bar along with an "island of slicers" that would presumably make for an interactive experience between the workers and the customers.

photo of wood-fired oven in The Backroom at Moody's, Waltham, MassachusettsAfter hearing recently that the expanded space would actually be a wine bar called The Backroom--and that it was getting closer to opening--I headed over and had the chance to take a brief look at the new space. The folks behind Moody's have done a nice job with the room, making it look like a completely separate spot from the deli (which it is, really, since a wall separates the two with the entrance to the new space being in the front of the shop). The Backroom has both rustic touches and a modern, clean feel, with attractive hanging lights, comfortable-looking seats at the bar, additional table seating along the outer walls, and lots of storage (and countless bottles) behind the bar. In the kitchen area in back of the wine bar is a good-sized copper wood-fired oven that will surely be put to good use, and it sounds like one of the items that will be cooked in the oven will be pizza.

Moody's Delicatessen and Provisions has become a bit of a destination spot for food lovers since it opened, and The Backroom will likely only add to the popularity of this place. It looks like The Backroom may be opening in early April, so get ready for this highly-anticipated opening.
