Photo of Highland Cafe, Malden, MA Right off the bat, it should be mentioned that Malden's Highland Cafe has much more on its menu than pizza. The lasagna is top-notch, as is the chicken parmigiana and many of the other dishes served here. The pizza, however, is what brings many to this working-class joint. If you like bar pizza, the Highland serves about the best in the Boston area.

It is easy to drive by the Highland Cafe. Located on a busy street near the Malden/Medford line, most drivers zip by without giving this humble-looking place a second glance. For those who know, though, the Highland a treasure to come to on a Friday night after a long working week or a Sunday with family members. The atmosphere is classic, with waitresses that call everyone "honey," locals that gulp beer and watching sports in the bar area, and well-worn tables that have just enough room for pizza. And oh, that pizza...greasy, gooey, and delicious, the Highland Cafe's pies are something special.

You won't find the Highland Cafe in many (if any) Boston restaurant guides. It is found solely by word-of-mouth, which is how this pizza lover discovered it several years ago. The next time you are in the Malden area, head up Highland Avenue for some fantastic pizza. And if you don't like pizza, head to the Highland, anyways, as there is the whole rest of the menu from which to choose.
