The 2010 season is just getting going and fans will once again be making their way to the Fenway area in droves. What restaurants are worth checking out in the area? In this special Boston restaurant feature, Boston's Hidden Restaurants gives a selected list of some of the best restaurants (several of which are little-known) near Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox, as well as a list of restaurants slightly further away from the ballpark. Yes, it is a little more upscale than your typical restaurant to go to before or after a game, but the French food at this Kenmore Square spot is award-winning and the prices are surprisingly reasonable.

Hamburgers

Audubon Circle, a restaurant that is within sight of Fenway Park, has some of the best burgers in Boston. This Beacon Street restaurant can get crowded when the Red Sox are playing, but it is often quiet at other times.

Uburger

Perhaps no longer a hidden gem, Uburger nevertheless serves some of the best-tasting patties in all of Boston. Uburger is convenient as well, as it is only about a 5-minute walk from Fenway (there is also a second location on Comm. Ave. heading toward Allston).

Just across the Mass. Pike from Fenway Park in Kenmore Square, India Quality serves some of the best, if not THE best, Indian food in Boston. The friendly service adds to the experience at this little restaurant.

Tasty, wholesome Italian cuisine including pasta, pizza, and calzones can be had at Canestaro's, which is located on quiet Peterborough Street, just a few blocks from Fenway Park.

Mexican Restaurants

If you like good, cheap, authentic Mexican cuisine, then El Pelon Taqueria is for you. On the same street as Canestaro's (see above), this tiny Mexican restaurant competes quite nicely with the best Mexican restaurants in Boston.

T. Anthony's is a popular place with both college students and Red Sox fans. Its location on Commonwealth Avenue makes T. Anthony's a favorite among Boston University students. Their pizza is one of the best-kept secrets in the Boston area.

Woody's serves classic bar pizza, which is just the right type of meal before a Red Sox game. This restaurant is truly hidden, but it can get a bit crowded before games.

Thai Restaurants

Formerly home to the original Brown Sugar Cafe (a second Brown Sugar is still open on Comm. Ave. near BU), this new-ish restaurant has a fairly similar menu to Brown Sugar, with a wide variety of Thai dishes. Only a few blocks south of Fenway Park, Thaitation is both convenient and a healthy option for food.

Trident Booksellers and Cafe

Combine a great bookstore with a great dining spot, and you have Trident Booksellers and Cafe. This Back Bay gem is a terrific place to read the Sunday newspaper and eating pancakes before heading over to a Red Sox game.

Shanghai Gate is a terrific Chinese restaurant in the heart of Allston, which is only a short drive, or a long walk, from Fenway. Dinners are fresh, inexpensive, and delicious at this authentic Chinese dining spot.

Steve's Restaurant is an old-school Greek dining spot in the heart of Boston's trendiest neighborhood. This restaurant has terrific Greek entrees at reasonable prices, and is about a 20-minute walk from Fenway Park.

A new spot where Rangoli used to be, Dawat is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week. This little restaurant features a number of goat and lamb dishes as well as several tandoori entrees.

Middle Eastern Restaurants

Cafe Jaffa is an excellent Middle Eastern restaurant that happens to be pretty close to Fenway Park. Located a few blocks east of Kenmore Square, Cafe Jaffa is a good place to enjoy a nice, quiet meal before heading to the ballpark.

Shawarma King

Brookline's Shawarma King is a small Middle Eastern restaurant in the heart of Coolidge Corner. The shawarma chicken is the specialty at this dining spot, though they have a number of other delicious dishes. Shawarma King is located on Beacon Street, so it is a quick T ride (or longer walk) down to Fenway Park from here.

Sandwiches

Cafe Amsterdam may be the size of a shoebox, but this South End sandwich and pastry shop should not be overlooked. The sandwiches here are fresh and delicious, and the croissants are fabulous.

Dok Bua is a bit further away from Fenway Park than the other restaurant listed here, but this Brookline dining spot may just be the best Thai restaurant in the Boston area. And if you like long walks, Fenway is easily reachable from here.
