Your Go-To Place for Cocktails?

(From Our Questions and Answers Feature)

What restaurant or bar in the Boston area do you typically go to for a cocktail? And what drink do you usually get there? Doesn't matter what type of place or what kind of cocktail--it could be something fairly trendy from the latest hot spot (such as a flavored vodka drink), something more old-school from a hotel bar or old-money spot (such as a whiskey sour), or something cheap and strong from a dive bar or college watering hole (such as a Jack Daniels and coke). Would have to be "bartender's choice" at Drink over in Fort Point. Those folks are amazing. Best avoided on weekends, though, when the crowds limit the staff's ability to interact with patrons, which is kind of the whole point of the place.

Drink is good, but crowded.
I like the Commonwealth Cooler at the Globe on Boylston St. Tastes like a soft drink....and then you stand up.

While the craft at Drink is unparalleled, it's out of the way for me (live in Somerville, work in Cambridge) so I don't make my way down there that often. When I want a cocktail that I couldn't make at home, I go to Green Street. They've been overshadowed by Drink in the last year (and have lost a great bartender to them) but it's easy to access for folks on this side of the river and the food gives you a reason to stay there for a couple of rounds.

Seconding MC Slim JB with the recommendation for Drink. You can tell that every staff member there really cares about making a superb cocktail.
Nine times out of ten, though, I just get Josie to make me an old-fashioned. She has a gift.

It's gotta be Drink on a Sunday or Monday night. Or Eastern Standard anytime.

Since everyone already mentioned Drink, also don't miss out on Craigie on Main's cocktail whim. You get four miniature cocktails that progress in courses, made with the same creativity and attention to detail as their food.

Clio is doing the most creative yet still classic things with cocktails in the city. While Drink is obviously great and garners a lot of attention due to John Gertsen (much deserved) Todd Maul at Clio is taking the art of preparing classic cocktails to the next level...unmatched in Boston. He is a historian, a scientist and a bartender all rolled into one. Plus, he wields a massive 100 drink cocktail list versus the small rotation of cocktails that Drink will make. Try Clio bar and you will see. Todd Maul gets it done.
