Best Bagels in the Boston Area?
(From Our Questions and Answers Feature)
It seems difficult to find good bagels around Boston. I've had some decent one shere and there, but none of them really stand out, especially compared to some of the incredible bagels I've had in and around New York City (Main Street Bagel in Queens may have the best bagels I've ever tried). Does anyone know of any truly great places for bagels in the Boston area? [Go here to post a reply.]

Bagel World in Peabody, Reading, and Salem makes a righteous bagel, with a nice "tooth," beautiful crust, just enough salt in the dough and an almost NY size. All the classics are excellent, and their Health Bar is great for runners and backpackers. The lines out the door are proof of their quality and value. The shops are very simple and are run by a non-Jewish Polish family with a staff of mostly Brazilian bakers and servers, many who have been with them for years. I am a native of the NYC metro area, and these bagels are among the best I've had anywhere!

Cafe Fresh in Needham/Dedham.
I'm from Needham so thats mine. The bagels are great, almost at the NYC level. They also have great egg sandwiches and the best chive cream cheese in the world.

Bagel World is good. But the closest we have to NY Bagels is Bronx Bagel in Milford.
And if you've never had a bagel in Montreal, you should plan a trip north as soon as possible.

I totally agree with the bagel world (I've only been to the Reading one) as the second best around here.
The BEST is when my parents come up from NY to visit and bring two dozen with them.

In the area, I'd definitely go with Bagel World in Peabody, Reading and Salem. Further afield, Scratch in Portland, Maine makes brilliant bagels. Their salt bagel is my favorite. Ever. Even further afield, Myer's in Burlington, VT makes a great Montreal bagel.
