Photo of El Sarape, Braintree, MA One reason I love to travel west from Boston to San Diego and nearby North County time and time again is because I can't get enough of the food at the traditional Mexican restaurants out there. Places like Fidel's in Solana Beach and Bahia Don Bravo in La Jolla serve impossibly tasty meals that Boston and, for that matter, most of the rest of the country never gets to try. Fortunately, the Boston area is starting to catch up to the Left Coast, with several authentic dining spots popping up in the area.

One such Mexican restaurant--El Sarape--can be found south of Boston in a working class part of Braintree called Weymouth Landing. Once inside the little storefront, one finds a couple of warmly-colored rooms and a good number of comfortable tables. The service at El Sarape is friendly and efficient, and brings chips and salsa that go well beyond the usual fare that so many so-called Mexican restaurants in Boston serve these days.

The restaurant's menu includes traditional entrees as well as more familiar fare. Combination plates can be ordered at El Sarape if you want to try a little bit of everything. One standout is the mole sauce, which has a slight cocoa flavor to it. Many of the dishes can be had with this sauce. I strongly recommend that you try it.

The Weymouth Landing neighborhood of Braintree isn't exactly known as a culinary capital, but with El Sarape serving such top-quality fare, you may want to head over and get a taste of some great food at a truly authentic Mexican restaurant. It's not far from Boston, and is a helluva lot closer than Solana Beach.
